Ember Mug 3 Review: Temperature Controls, Battery Life and Price

Ember Mug 3 adds five physical temperature presets, LED indicators and dishwasher-safe cleaning. Explore its battery life, US pricing and key differences from Mug 2.

Ember Mug 3 Review: Temperature Controls, Battery Life and Price

Ember’s third-generation smart mug addresses three everyday frustrations with heated drinkware: needing a phone to adjust the temperature, worrying about cleaning electronic components, and watching a battery run out before a drink is finished. The Ember Mug 3 adds physical temperature controls, a battery indicator and dishwasher-safe construction, with US prices starting at $129.95. The changes make it more practical than its predecessor in several ways, but its control button placement and limited battery life still matter when deciding whether a premium mug is worth buying.

Ember Mug 3 makes temperature adjustments possible without a phone

The most useful change is a button on the bottom of the mug that cycles through five preset temperatures: 125, 130, 135, 140 and 145 degrees Fahrenheit. That means someone who finds their tea too cool can raise the setting without opening an app, connecting over Bluetooth or searching through a phone menu. A row of small LED indicators displays the selected temperature and battery level, making the mug easier to operate without checking a companion device. The default temperature is 135 degrees Fahrenheit, although users can select another preset whenever they want.

There is a limitation to the physical controls. The five settings are fixed, so users cannot assign their own preferred temperatures to the button. Ember's mobile app still allows more precise adjustments within the supported 120–145-degree Fahrenheit range, as well as additional customization and firmware updates. This creates a useful distinction: the mug itself handles everyday adjustments, while the app remains available for people who want finer control. Buyers who prefer appliances that work independently of a phone will appreciate the change, even if they may occasionally need the app for more specialized settings.

The new bottom button solves one problem but creates another

Moving temperature control onto the mug reduces dependence on software, but putting the button underneath the cup is an awkward compromise. Pressing it while the mug is full can require lifting or tilting the vessel, which is inconvenient when it contains a hot drink. The placement is particularly noticeable when someone wants to adjust the temperature while reading, working or sitting on a sofa. A side-mounted control would be easier to reach, although Ember's design keeps the exterior relatively uncluttered.

This is more than a cosmetic concern because physical controls are supposed to make a device simpler to use. A feature that eliminates several phone interactions but requires careful handling of a hot beverage only partly achieves that goal. The LED indicators are a more straightforward improvement: they provide information at a glance without requiring the user to unlock a phone. Together, these changes make Mug 3 easier to operate than an app-dependent mug, but the button remains a practical detail worth considering before purchasing.

Battery life is still the main limit for long coffee sessions

Ember lists approximately 90 minutes of temperature maintenance for the 10-ounce Mug 3 and 80 minutes for the 14-ounce model, based on its stated operating conditions. That is enough for many desk-side coffee breaks, but it is not the same as keeping a drink hot throughout an extended workday. The included charging coaster provides a way to maintain the temperature for longer periods when the mug is stationary. Buyers who regularly move between rooms or carry their drinks around should pay particular attention to the difference between cordless operation and use on the coaster.

The mug's heating system regulates the drink's temperature rather than simply providing insulation. Sensors monitor the beverage and the built-in heating components add heat when necessary to maintain the selected setting. This differs from a conventional insulated mug, which slows heat loss but cannot actively restore a drink to a chosen temperature. The trade-off is dependence on a rechargeable battery and charging hardware, so the convenience of precise temperature control comes with more maintenance than an ordinary cup.

Dishwasher safety makes Mug 3 easier to maintain

Cleaning is one of the most meaningful improvements because previous Ember Mug models required hand washing. Mug 3 can go on the top rack of a dishwasher when using a low-temperature cycle, and its sliding lid can be cleaned the same way. The charging coaster, however, must stay out of the dishwasher and should never be immersed in water. Users should also keep the mug away from microwaves because its electronic components make microwave heating unsafe.

These restrictions are worth understanding before treating the product like an ordinary ceramic mug. Dishwasher compatibility reduces the effort involved in daily cleanup, but it does not eliminate the need to follow the manufacturer's care instructions. Someone buying the mug mainly for convenience should consider the full routine: charge it, use it within its cordless operating window, return it to the coaster when needed and clean it according to the specified cycle. For frequent coffee and tea drinkers, the easier washing process may be more valuable over time than the novelty of app-controlled heating.

Ember Mug 3 price starts at $129.95

Ember lists the 10-ounce Mug 3 at $129.95 and the 14-ounce version at $149.95 in the United States. The smaller size suits modest servings, while the larger capacity makes more sense for people who prefer a substantial coffee or tea. The 14-ounce model is offered in several colors, including Sage Green, Sandstone, Salt Blue, Matcha Green, Lavender and Powder Blue, alongside black and white. The smaller model has a more limited color selection, so size and appearance may influence the decision as much as capacity.

The price is difficult to justify if the only requirement is keeping coffee warm for a few extra minutes. An ordinary insulated mug costs considerably less and does not need a battery or charging coaster, although it cannot maintain an exact drinking temperature. Mug 3 makes more sense for people who repeatedly return to a drink over an extended sitting and care about keeping it at a consistent warmth. The dishwasher-safe design and built-in controls improve the everyday experience, but they do not change the fact that buyers are paying a substantial premium for temperature regulation.

Ember Mug 2 owners do not need to upgrade automatically

The previous Mug 2 already supports app-based temperature adjustments and maintains a selected temperature using its built-in heating system. Its principal disadvantages compared with Mug 3 are the lack of the new physical controls and the requirement to hand wash the mug. Mug 3 therefore offers a clearer benefit to someone who regularly struggles with app pairing or dislikes cleaning electronic drinkware by hand than to someone whose existing mug already fits their routine.

Ember also confirms that Mug 2 remains supported and that Mug 3 works with existing Ember charging coasters, including those from earlier generations. That compatibility reduces the need to replace a working charging accessory when upgrading. Owners should still compare their existing mug's condition and battery performance with the new model's features before spending more money. If the old mug works reliably and hand washing is not a concern, keeping it is a reasonable choice.

Who should buy the Ember Mug 3?

Mug 3 is best suited to people who sip coffee or tea slowly at a desk, read while drinking or often leave a beverage untouched long enough for it to cool. Its direct temperature controls and dishwasher-safe construction address genuine usability problems rather than simply adding another connected feature. The product is less compelling for people who finish drinks quickly, need several hours of cordless heating or want an inexpensive way to keep beverages warm. A conventional insulated mug is a more economical choice for those use cases.

Before buying, consider how often the charging coaster will be available, whether the 10-ounce or 14-ounce capacity suits your usual drink, and whether the fixed temperature presets are sufficient. The Mug 3's strongest argument is the combination of temperature maintenance, simpler everyday controls and easier cleaning. Its biggest weakness is that the battery and bottom-mounted button still impose limitations on an appliance designed to make drinking a hot beverage more convenient. Those details, rather than the smart-mug label, should determine whether the extra cost makes sense.
